Jazz Neversleeps: “Ever since me and my girl got back together, ‘When I Said Goodbye’ by Mayer Hawthorne & The County became a theme song for me.
I’ve played it over and over again and it’s just a beautiful song really. Timeless soul music.”
Jazz Neversleeps presents: Mayer Hawthorne:
Listen to “When I said goodbye”
(Used with permission from the artist)
Mayer Hawthorne, otherwise known as Haircut (of Athletic Mic League) is a 28 year old Los Angeles based producer, vocalist and dj. On the move from the Detroit area to LA, he bumped into the guys from the Stones Throw record label at the infamous Do-Over club.
Noelle Scaggs (The Rebirth) introduced him to label boss Peanut Butter Wolf who was happy to receive a demo tape with a couple of Mayer Hawthorne tracks.
Three months of silence followed. Until Wolf got back to Haircut, convincing him he wanted to release a complete Mayer Hawthorne album on Stones Throw. There were no plans at all to record an album when he made the demo tape, but from then on, shit was real!
To this day, Haircut is recording songs…
Haircut plays most of the instruments on the album, as well as singing all the doo-wop vocal parts himself (which was apparently immense fun to do). Thank you, Wolf! I’m putting the album right next to my Gil Scott-Heron and Al Green records.
The “When I said goodbye / Just ain’t gonna work out” single on Stones Throw should be on the shelves in the very near future, while the full album won’t see daylight until mid 2009. That’ll be just in time for a release party on me and my girls wedding, Mayer!
Trivia time: the Mayer Hawthorne logo for the debut single was designed by Hermon Weems, a legendary Detroit drummer and painter who created the Funkadelic logo!

oh yes, absolutely feeling this one too .. it seems this popularity in doo-wop throwback songs got everybody harmonizing again these days. And unlike 50 years ago, you can easily take care of the vocal backings yourself. Bring on the doo-wop package shows

That’s really wonderful! Really, it is!
Let me just add this little thing here…you know, while we all are getting to hear an awful lot and overload of crap on most radiostations, and the same 1 song track by a cool artist, and the same bullshit playlists over and over on every radiostation,
it’s really a relief that you can still listen to some fresh music every once in a while, getting pitched on through the internet.
This Mayer Hawthorne sure is one of those cats i’d love to hear more from, and love to hear on the airwaves, when i’m driving in my car from work or something.
Never got used to playing cd’s in my new car either (you see, my previous car still had a tapedeck), and i’m still buying vinyl…so i’m kinda stuck on “new” music for in my car. It’s a mindstate thing, call me oldfashioned. Still rockin’ that OMAR (sing) cd now everyday, and that makes me happy in the morning. It’s crazy, rockin’ 1 cd for 7 or 8 months now. Good music man… i really miss it when i switch my carstereo over to fm radio.
So…hooray for these new tunes!!

In Response to Vic, i have come to learn that radio is just as clueless as the labels releasing the artist that they play. The thing is as relevant as the radio is, so is the demand for songs that there listeners want to here. I found out that a request to a local radio Dj can go a long way, as they multiply 1 caller x’s 10. Hence if 2 people call and request to hear lolli pop which is already on the frequent player playlist anyway, they make it seem as though 20 people called to request that song.
Everything is payolla nowadays from the clubs to the broadcasts. It’s really on people like us to make it known that we want our local artist supported on our local radio stations. Until that happens in a massive form nothing is going to change.
