Thriving force behind the infamous Onda Sonora Soundsystem BLA is second on the already highly beloved ‘2008: All Eyes On…’ series of lists. (for part one, check Nalden’s input)
Known as the moodiest bastard around, BLA is still our man. Heavy on the recordcollecting and partying-till-the-break-of-dawn tip one can only envy his enthousiasm and love for music.

OndaSonora is BLA and Disco Dalglish, responsible for rocking many a party around, and for booking fine names such as Benji B and Red Astaire, amongst many, many others.

Somewhere in the first quarter of 2008 you’ll be blessed with an official OndaSonora on-point podcast episode over here too. Me, I looking forward to that, so I suggest you do the same.
But for now, here’s Part Two in our continued series of 2008 namedroppings, take your pad, take your pen, and start taking notes. This is heat!

Bullion – (listen)
London beatmaker, as so many cats, deeply influenced by Dilla but to me the freshest of ‘em all. His rework of the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds” was very good but the new tunes I’ve heard from him are promising even more.
Binky Griptite – (listen)
Plays guitar with Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings but will release his own LP somewhere next year. Lost my interest in the whole Deep Funk scene a bit. Still like the music but it’s getting formulaic. Long time since I’ve heard something really fresh. Maybe Binky Griptite – how cool can a name be – will change this.
Jodi Milliner – (listen)
Musical mastermind behind Tawiah. “Watch Out” was one of my favourites of 2007. In 2008 there’ll be more coming where that came from. UK soul that grabs you by the balls.
Phil Asher – (listen)
Hardly a new kid on the block but very easily the most underrated cat in the biz. One of the best and most consistent producers around but due to a lack of organisation / ambition or simply too much weed only recognised by a small incrowd. But that might change this year with his Phlash & Friends project that’s got everything to gain him more notoriety. This being very dope music and lots of high profile guests.
Al Kent – (listen)
Scottish Disco connoisseur extraordinaire and man behind Million Dollar Disco (Orchestra). That Orchestra will release an LP on BBE in 2008. Hopefully putting Disco back on the musical map but that’s just wishful thinking I guess. Well, from 2008 the general public will recognise a new King of Disco next to Dimitri from Paris and Joey Negro, that’s for sure.
Linkwood Family – (listen)
Freaks about all things early House with a Detroit / Chicago vibe. Have been releasing überdope vinyl on Firecracker records which every selfrespecting collector should have. Will continue to conquer the world slowly but surely in 2008.
Jay Electronica
Has been named as the next big thing by so many I can’t stay behind. And if people like Erykah Badu and Just Blaze think very high of you, who am I to say something else. Certainly when you release such beautiful music.
The SHHHHH People – (listen)
Aka Mr. Beatnick and Charles II. They got the most stupid aliases but they make dope music and host and even iller site. Mos def need to check their first edit outfit. Simple but utter goodness. Music aficionados with that typical British taste for dry humor. Love ‘em.
Anthony Vanden Borre
2008 will be his year. Mark my words.
Disco Dalglish
Because he’s the dopest kid around. Future of beatdiggin’ and Serato at the same time.

  2. 2 Onda Sonora Subspace :: BLA predicting 2008 on On-Point.be :: January :: 2008

[...] Still trying to fabricate an end of year list. I like to invest some time an energy into it so that it is a complete and fun to read list. While waiting for that you can find some predictions I made for 2008 on On-Point.be. Alex asked me and some others like Lefto, Kwak and Nalden to list some names of who make a breakthrough in 2008. This is what I predicted. Enjoy it and watch’em. [...]
