Lord Knows!

A friendly guy from Apollo magazine asks me here if I’m down for covering a track of the Odelay album from Beck. You may know this album from songs such as “The new pollution” or “Where it’s at” or “Devil’s haircut”.
Sure enough, I figured: Let’s do this! I decide what track I want to cover, but… it has to be on that album. Please, read on! There’s more!

Well, I chose “Lord only knows”, because it’s not such a popular song. Go check out the original! I can do whatever I want with it, I have carte blanche.
There’s one string attached to it though: I have to collaborate with someone I’ve never worked with before, and he or she has to be completely out of my genre or style, so that adds a little challenge to the project.

I didn’t have to look very far to find someone like that though, as the neighbourhood is full of talented cats here in Kuurne,
Kortrijk, Zwevegem, Roeselare, – you name it – just waiting to come out!
So I chose an artist I’ve been wanting to work with for quite some time now. Nouk, a very talented upcoming artist, and I’ll be Napoleon if she doesn’t get airplay on national radiostations after her debut album drops.
The music of Nouk is not at all funk or jazz orientated, she’s a singer-songwriter. Think acoustic guitars and a very amazing voice! Go check her music… now!

Quite a challenge this thing is, mostly because I had to explore new chords on my organ and electric piano, so that’s why I put stickers on my keys, to help me remember the chords and thus practise them, a neat trick I learned a couple of years ago when I practised scratching on the turntable.

See, those stickers help you to see where the sample begins and ends on a record. Simply put the sticker on the end of the record, and when your sample begins, watch the needle and put that sticker in the direction of the needle. Easy isn’t it!

I just knew these scratchtechniques would come in handy for other things too! Things like drumming, or… making love to a beautiful woman. Hahaha!!

Stay tuned !
